But China should realize that some EU countries have

become increasingly cautious about deepening cooperation with China because of its rapid developm

ent; in fact, a few EU countries have decided to implement tougher measures for foreign trade. The European Commission even put

forward a 10-point policy package on China on March 11, which the European Council discussed on March 21.

But the fact that the Commission sees China as a “cooperation partner”, “negotiating partner”, “eco

nomic competitor” as well as a “systemic rival” means it wants to build on the partnership of strategic cooperation with China.

The EU’s attempt to coordinate the concerns of its different members and its efforts to continue dialogue with China reflect coope

ration are not a subjective choice of one single EU country but an objective choice for the mutual interest of all the parties involved.

China has addressed many of the EU’s concerns to strengthen coop

eration, including further opening-up. And it should keep taking measures to strengt

hen cooperation and communication to settle the disputes with EU countries and meet the emerging challenges.

With a length of 6.8 kilometers and a width of 46 meters

the two-way eight-lane tunnel will be the largest and widest in the worl

d upon completion. Its tunnel will be 1.2 meters longer and two lanes wider than the HZMB.

Yang said the immersed tunnel used the steel shell tube, the first of its kind in China, and there were many other new struct

ures and technologies, which brought lots of challenges, such as lack of technical standards in the country.

He said the tunnel will have 32 tubes and each tube will have about 10,000 tons of steel, 165 met

ers long and with a displacement of about 80,000 tons. Each tube has more than 2,500 separate chambers.

After tubes are built in factory, they are floated to th

e construction site, and the most difficult process is to sink and connect, Yan

g said. His company has invited experts to deliberate in rounds on the cement pouring, sealing and connection.

The Shenzhen-Zhongshan Bridge is another important infrastructure project of the country’s 13th Five-Year Plan (2016-2020).

The construction started on Dec 29, 2016. It is expected to put into operation in 2024.

Since 2015, more than 100 foreign experts and students

from countries involved in the BRI have visited Hainan annually to study agricultural technology, including Nanf

an’s breeding program, which is “playing the role of Silicon Valley for the country’s seed industry”, Wang said.

Hainan’s climate and biological resources have made Nanfan an important nation

al center of seed propagation. Every winter, more than 7,000 domestic agricultural scientists and

workers are busy at the Nanfan centers. More than 70 percent of the country’s 7,000 crop varieties have been culti

vated in the tropical island province, which is building a global resources center, National Business Daily reported.

“With good stress resistance and higher yields, hybrid rice seeds developed by Nanfan’s ce

nters are being welcomed in Southeast Asian countries,” said Xie Zhenyu, an assistant research fellow at th

The ministry also called for small and medium-sized enterprises to forge alliances for common development to consolidate the fragmented logistics sector.

In recent years, China’s logistics industry has been experiencing consistent growth on the back of steady economic progress and a rising domestic market. Accor

ding to the National Development and Reform Commission, logistics expenditures rose 9.8 percent to 13.3 trillion yuan, am

ounting to 14.8 percent of last year’s national GDP. The share was slightly up from the previous year.

The logistics sector is of strategic importance in the development of the market econom

ced logistics spending by 56 billion yuan in 2016, 68 billion yuan in 2017 and 98 billion yuan in 2018.

China ranked 12th last year in the World Bank’s logistics performan

Considering that the two accidents took place after ne

Boeing 737 MAX 8s were delivered, and went down just minutes after taking off, within five months of each other, they have some degre

e of similarity,” the administration said in its statement. The administration grounded all Chinese Boeing 737 MAX 8 jets on March 11.

“With China suspending the airworthiness certificate for the Boeing 737 MAX 8, domesti

c airlines are unable to purchase this model,” Li said, adding that it will undoubtedly cause great economic losses to Boeing.

As of the end of January, the Boeing 737 MAX family had 5,011 orders worldwide, of which 3

50 had been delivered. More than 420 orders came from China, with 96 already in commercial operation.

The future of the commercial aviation market in China is very exciting, Li said, and no othe

r country has more demand for aircraft. But safety questions are hindering Boeing, Li said.

More appetite among Chinese, Asian collectors for Western art

hinese and Asian art collectors have become more knowledgeable, sophisticated and are branching out for m

ore Western works, said Francis Belin, president of Christie’s Asia, who is excited about the trend.

“Chinese clients have evolved from being very dedicated to Chinese arts to gaining increasing interest

in other categories and expanding the spectrum of the type of objects that they wish to collect,” Belin told

Xinhua in an interview in New York City during Christie’s Asian Art Week held on March 19-26.

Diversity of collecting is one of three “fundamental trends” the auction house has obse

rved among the Chinese and Asian buyers, Belin said, noting the increased appetite to collect across categories.

About 10 or 20 years ago, Asian collectors focused primarily on the art that relates to their own c

ulture, he said, “we’ve seen this evolved in the past years to be much more holistic in the collecting of our Asian buyers.”

According to EY consultancy, financial services have relo

cated around 1 trillion pounds ($1.32 trillion) worth of assets, up from 800 billion pounds last quarter, from London to elsewhere in the EU since the 2016 Brexit

referendum, and more than 2,300 new workers have been hired locally by financial services companies in mainland Europe.

Pundits are still optimistic that Brexit will not significantly change London’s role as a global financial hub, arguing that co

mpanies are relocating in response to the wishes of their clients, not because of Brexit.

Donoghue said: “Major global financial firms, they are not abando

ning London as a consequence of Brexit. They are merely carving out the European Union side

of the business that is currently domiciled in London and relocating that element only to EU domicile because tha

t’s what the customers require and that’s what they need to do to preserve the market access to the EU.”

Catherine McGuinness, City of London corporation policy

chair, is confident that, in the long-run, London will retain its role as a leading international financial cen

ter because it has a dynamic cluster of financial and professional services that are used by the wider world, and not only Europe.

Zhang Zuhao, a sixth grade student, used to misbehave and h

As a professional writer, Chu has interviewed dozens of peop

from across the country who moved to Dali. She and her husband, who help organize activities

such as gardening, hiking and cycling for newcomers, have a big circle of friends who have relocated to the city.

“People have different reasons for leaving, ranging from the need to take care of elderly pare

nts who have stayed in their hometowns, to taking their children back to big cities for better education,” she said.

People are also leaving because after two or three years without work, they need to find paid employment.

In recent years, thousands of people have moved to Dali from big cities. The exact number is not kno

wn, but a rough estimate from the local government shows that about 40,000 newcomers are living in the city.

Many people decided to leave their jobs and move to Dali from large cities such as Beijing, Shanghai and Guangzhou, capital of Guangdong pro

vince, due to work pressures and surging property prices, which have been hotly debated nationwide in recent years.
